Beverly Tan – based in Melbourne
Registered Psychologist

Beverly is a Singaporean Counselling Psychologist with a Masters in Applied Psychology from National Institute of Education-Nanyang Technological University (NIE-NTU) and Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) from National University of Singapore (NUS). She is currently registered with the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
Beverly has experience in the social and mental health services for over 8 years. When working at the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), she conducted assessments and interventions with complex families where abuse was present. Very often there were underlying psychological problems in these families such as, mood disorders, substance-related and addictive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Beverly carried out intensive family work with caregivers and their children from various cultural backgrounds including expatriates. She eventually specialised in family mediation work with elderly parents and their adult children. However, her most enriching time was working with adolescents when she provided individual/group therapy in the Singapore Boys’ Home (SBH) and Dayspring Residential Treatment Centre.
After receiving a 5 years long service award from the government, Beverly left to explore the community setting where she worked at a Psychological Services Unit in a Family Service Centre. She worked with families whose children had challenges such as, ADHD, dyslexia, and anger management. She also gained experience in psychological testing. Shortly after she worked as a private psychologist in several clinics and conducted therapy with children and adults. The adults she worked with had family and relationship problems, workplace and financial stressors, or even health issues. She also led parenting workshops. Currently, Beverly provides psychological services virtually to clients in Singapore and in person to clients in Melbourne. She is working in the Western suburb of Melbourne.
Aside from being a psychologist, Beverly enjoys training and lecturing. She previously conducted trainings such as, problem-solving and conflict resolution for adolescents under the care of MSF. And she is currently an associate at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).
Since her work in MSF, Beverly has been trained in various approaches such as, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy. However, she uses Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach as her main foundation. Third wave cognitive behavioural therapies have been her recent interest and she is trained in Mindfulness and Schema Therapy. She has also taken up Family Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Through her own personal experiences, Beverly recognizes that at times resilience is a quality that allows one to “bounce back” from difficult situations. This is what she aims to build with her clients. However, relationship is key to successful therapeutic work and Beverly hopes to build a genuine connection with you. Beverly speaks both English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia.
